Educational Sessions/Networking ... More than 15 societies have been hard at work over the past 24+ months developing the educational sessions, networking opportunities and social offerings for this conference. Their goal was to create an outstanding learning experience in a dynamic environment that encourages networking and synergy.
Educational sessions are scheduled for all disciplines, and appraisal professionals may, in addition to attending their own specialized educational sessions, attend one of the other disciplines’ educational sessions in place of their own.
Keynote Speakers
George J. Mitchell,
former U.S. senator and Senate majority leader, will deliver the opening keynote address at Valuation 2000. Since leaving the Senate in 1995, Mitchell joined the Washington, D.C., law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand. He served recently as chair of the peace negotiations in Ireland. Under his leadership, the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom and the political parties of Northern Ireland reached an historic accord, ending decades of conflict.Mitchell will share his unique insights on events unfolding around the world and how those events may impact the valuation profession.
Hjalma E. Johnson, president of the American Bankers Association (ABA), will address Valuation 2000 participants and discuss how changes in the banking industry affect appraisers. He is the chair and CEO of East Coast Bank Corp., Dade City, Fla.; chair of the Bank at Ormond By-the-Sea, Ormond Beach, Fla.; managing director of Synagen Capital Partners Inc., Orlando, Fla.; and president of Investment Advisors Inc., Dade City.
A long-time active member of the ABA, Johnson moved up the ranks to positions of increasing responsibility that included the positions of treasurer and member of the executive committee, government relations council and community bankers council. He is an honorary director of the World Trade Center of Tampa Bay and a member of the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame.
A member of the Alabama Bar, Johnson earned a bachelor of industrial engineering degree with high honors from the University of Florida, Gainesville, and a juris doctor degree from the Birmingham School of Law.

Author, researcher, consultant and educator
Don Tapscott has been hailed as a "cyberguru"and one of the country’s most influential media authorities. He is the author of "Growing Up Digital: The Rise of the Net Generation," "The Digital Economy: Promise and Peril in the Age of Networked Intelligence" and "Creating Value in the Network Economy." He is the co-editor of "Blueprint to the Digital Economy." Tapscott brought enormous meaning to the phrases "paradigm shift," a change of orientation so great that it changes everything, and "digital economy," an engine of wealth fueled as much by the free flow of information as by tangible goods.Also, he is the chair of the Alliance for Converging Technologies, a think tank that is currently conducting a series of multimillion-dollar investigations regarding how the Internet and new media are transforming business, government and society. Tapscott, who is president of the New Paradigm Learning Corporation, is an internationally regarded consultant, speaker and authority on information technology in business and consults to the world’s largest corporations. Tapscott will discuss how valuation professionals fit into the new business model of tomorrow.
Thomas W. Wilson Jr.,
the industry director for communications, media and technology and the assistant commissioner of examination for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Washington, D.C., is responsible for planning, guiding and evaluating all examination programs nationwide. More than 20,000 IRS employees are involved in this examination program, and its budget exceeds $1.4 billion.A graduate of the 1991 Executive Development Program, Wilson began his career with the IRS in Los Angeles, Calif., where he held progressively responsible positions within the examinations division. He has served as the national director of corporate examinations and the assistant district director in Denver, Colo.
Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a master’s degree and doctorate in business from Hamilton University. While with the IRS, Wilson completed the executive management program in organizational change at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
For Valuation 2000, he will address how market forces are changing the appraisal requirements at the IRS.
